Jiménez-Porter Writers' House Student Activities

The Jiménez-Porter Writers’ House sponsors several campus-wide organizations. Get involved and get connected to the Writers’ House community!

STYLUS

Housed and supported by Jiménez-Porter Writers’ House, STYLUS is the undergraduate journal of poetry, prose and art at the University of Maryland. Stylus was founded in 1994, and named after the failed literary journal of Maryland’s own Edgar Allen Poe.

Since its inaugural volume, the journal has sparked conversations and contributed to the literary culture on campus. The publication has grown and thrived, cultivating a community of dedicated students passionate about literature and creativity.

Sign up for the Styuls newsletter to receive updates on events, submission openings, leadership positions, and other important announcements. For more information, please contact styluslit@umd.edu or visit the STYLUS website.

Terpoets

Founded in 2006 as a student initiative rooted in Writers’ House, Terpoets has since become a community outlet for poets, writers and performers of all kinds at the University of Maryland, College Park. Terpoets welcomes all forms of expression including poetry, prose, music and comedy. By fostering an environment of creativity, acceptance and respect, Terpoets seeks to create a space for free and open expression, as well as necessary cross-cultural dialogue.

Since 2017, Terpoets has partnered with The Clarice and Milkboy Arthouse to produce “Milk x Honey,” a semesterly open mic held at Milkboy. Terpoets has also been featured in TEDxUMD and has collaborated with Artsphere and Creative Unrest on open mics.

Novelist Support Group

Writing a book sounds scary, but if you take the time to attempt it yourself, you’ll find that it definitely is. To help one another in the book-writing journey, this group of novel writers have joined forces to exchange work, offer feedback and keep each other motivated to write regularly.

There are many fiction workshops on campus, but all focus on short fiction or isolated excerpts. Unlike other groups, we’re in it for the long haul, workshopping 5,000 words per member per week!

Novelist Support Group meets weekly, although meeting times shift often. If you’re interested in sharing your novel-in-progress or helping us write ours, email NovelistSupportGroup@umd.edu
