Michael Dirda, "Classics in the Classroom: The Life, Books, and Teaching of Lane Cooper"
Lane Cooper, professor of Classics at Cornell, translated Aristotle and Plato and authored many essays on liberal education grounded in classical learning. Michael Dirda has collected most of Cooper's books and will convey some of the wisdom and pleasure he has gleaned from them. Dirda's talk will also build on recent studies of classical scholarship in America, including the ongoing research by Judith Hallet (Classics, UMD) and others on Edith Hamilton.
Michael Dirda holds a PhD in Comparative Literature from Cornell University and was the Petrou Reader in Residence in the Deparment of English in Spring 2011. He won the Pulitzer Prize in 1993 for his book reviews and essays, and the 2012 Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers of America for his book On Conan Doyle: Or, the Whole Art of Storytelling (Princeton University Press, 2011).
