Families and UMD students are invited to meet Dr. Stephanie Shonekan, dean of the College of Arts and Humanities, for a conversation about music, culture, and the history of the civil rights movement ahead of a performance by the Grammy-winning legend Mavis Staples at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center. Mavis Staples, a rhythm and blues/soul/gospel singer and civil rights activist, rose to fame as a member of her family's band The Staple Singers, of which she is the last surviving member. Dean Shonekan, an ethnomusicologist, will lead a conversation about the meaning and power of music in our lives.
