Often unheard in the concert hall, the steelpan’s versatility is on full display in Jan Bach’s Concerto for Steelpan and Orchestra. This piece gives the soloist the opportunity to display impressive rhythm and technique while the steelpan’s brilliant sound sparkles above the orchestra. Director of UMD Steelbands Josanne Francis joins the UMD Wind Orchestra for a performance of this monumental work that highlights this dazzling instrument born in Trinidad and Tobago.
This performance also features Gustav Holst’s Hammersmith, Walter Hartley’s Concerto for 23 Instruments and James David’s Symphony No. 2, "The Road is Life."
