Mia Bloom

Mia Bloom is an International Security Fellow at the New America and Professor at Georgia State University. Bloom conducts research in Europe, the Middle East and South Asia and speaks eight languages. She’s the author of six books and 80 articles on violent extremism including Dying to Kill: The Allure of Suicide Terror (Columbia 2005), Living Together After Ethnic Killing (Routledge 2007) Bombshell: Women and Terror (UPenn 2011) and Small Arms: Children and Terror (Cornell 2019) and Pastels and Pedophiles: Inside the Mind of QAnon with Sophia Moskalenko (Stanford 2021). Her next book, Veiled Threats: Women and Jihad is scheduled for publication by Cornell University Press in 2024. Bloom is a former term member of the Council on Foreign Relations and has held appointments at Cornell, Harvard, Princeton, and McGill Universities. She serves on the Counter-Radicalization boards of the Anti-Defamation League, the UN Counter Terrorism Executive Directorate (UNCTED), Women Without Borders and several working groups for the Global Internet Forum for Counter Terrorism (GIFCT). Bloom has a PhD in political science from Columbia University, Masters in Arab Studies from Georgetown University and Bachelors in Russian, Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies from McGill, and her Pre-Doctorate from Harvard’s Center for International Studies and a Post-Doctorate from Princeton.

Dr. Scott Lasensky served as a Senior Policy Advisor on Israel, the Middle East, and Jewish affairs in the Obama Administration from 2011-2017, serving in Washington and Israel. He represented U.N. Ambassadors Susan E. Rice and Samantha J. Power in the interagency policymaking process, including participation in the Deputies Committee and other U.S. government and U.N. policymaking and policy processes. (USG security clearance: Top Secret/SCI) In Israel, he served with Ambassador Daniel Shapiro and was involved in all aspects of the U.S.-Israel bilateral relationship. He was a Visiting Fellow at the Israel Institute for National Security Studies (INSS), and previously a resident scholar and program leader at the U.S. Institute of Peace in Washington and the Council of Foreign Relations in New York.

 

Marwa Maziad

Dr. Marwa Maziad is a Visiting Lecturer of Israel Studies at University of Maryland, a Non-resident Scholar with the Middle East Institute’s Defense and Security Program and Senior Faculty Fellow at American University’s Center for Israel Studies in Washington, D.C. Dr. Maziad specializes in comparative civil-military relations, with a focus on the United States, Egypt, Israel, Turkey and the Gulf States. Dr. Maziad held academic faculty positions at Qatar University and Northwestern University in Qatar and published heavily on Middle East Security affairs. She is the co-editor of The Arab Gulf States and the West: Perceptions and Realities — Opportunities and Perils. Dr. Maziad also contributed to the Pentagon’s “Global Futures Report: Alternative Futures of Geopolitical Competition in a post-COVID19 World,” that came out of the US Air Force Warfighting Integration Capability (AFWIC) and its Strategic Foresight and Futures Branch. Her chapter covered “The Future of Geopolitical Competition in the Middle East.” Dr. Maziad has been a regular sought-after political commentator for international media outlets including NPR, BBC Arabic, i24News, France24, and CNN International. She is fluent in Arabic, French, Turkish, and Hebrew.

Mr. Thair Abu Ras is a PhD student in the Department of Government and Politics and the Gildenhorn Institute for Israel Studies. His research focuses on identity politics in intractable conflicts, and his main research interest focuses on how the Israeli-Palestinian conflict helps shape values and beliefs among Israeli Jews. Mr. Abu Ras holds a master's degree from the University of Houston and a bachelor's degree from the University of Haifa. A Palestinian citizen of Israel, Mr. Abu Ras has worked in both civil society and government, focusing on equal employment opportunities for the Arab community. He advocates for greater civil rights for minorities in Israel.
