Freedom Teaching: Maryland Humanities Summer Institute

College of Arts and Humanities | Douglass Center Friday, July 19, 2024 9:30 am - 4:30 pm Tawes Hall,

Inspired by the 60th anniversary, legacy, and ongoing significance of Freedom Summer and Freedom Schools, the theme for this year’s Summer Institute will be Freedom Teaching. Through a series of workshops led by UMD faculty and local area teachers, we will explore topics including

  • Rosa Parks and Black Power
  • Performing the Black Freedom Struggle
  • Teaching Palestine-Israel
  • AI & the Classroom
  • Pedagogy and Hip Hop

Maryland, DC, and Virginia secondary school and community-based educators are encouraged to attend!

  • Maryland school-based educators who attend will be eligible to receive 8 Professional Development Points (PDPs)! More information here.
  • DC School based educators who attend will receive a certificate of attendance for PLUs to submit for their renewal teacher credentials.
