About the Speakers
Shira Efron is a senior research fellow at the Institute for National Security Studies, a Special Advisor on Israel with the RAND Corporation, and an adjunct scholar at the Modern War Institute at West Point, New York. Previously, Dr. Efron was a Middle East analyst at several think tanks, including the Center for American Progress and the Middle East Institute. Her research focus is U.S. policy toward the Middle East, including on Israel's evolving ties with China and the Israeli-Arab conflict, and the nexus between climate change and national security.
Ilan Goldenberg is a senior fellow and director of the Middle East Security Program at the Center for a New American Security. Before CNAS, Goldenberg served as the chief of staff to the special envoy for Israeli-Palestinian Negotiations at the U.S. State Department. He also is a past senior professional staff member on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and served as a special advisor on the Middle East and then as the Iran Team Chief in the Office of the Under-Secretary of Defense for Policy. Goldenberg is also an adjunct professor at Georgetown University's Security Studies Program.
Tamar Hermann is the academic director of the Guttman Center for Public Opinion and Policy Research at the Israel Democracy Institute, Jerusalem, and a faculty member of the Political Science Department at the Open University of Israel. She taught at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Tel Aviv University, and was a guest lecturer at Princeton University, Queen's University in Belfast, and the WZB Berlin Social Science Center.
Scott Lasensky is a professor of Israel Studies at the University of Maryland. He was a senior policy advisor on Israel, the Middle East and Jewish affairs in the Obama administration. He spent part of this time in Israel, serving as a senior advisor to the U.S. Ambassador to Israel Daniel Shapiro. He previously served as a senior policy advisor to U.S. Ambassadors to the United Nations, focusing on Israel, the Palestinians, and Syria. He has also been a resident scholar at the U.S. Institute of Peace and the Council of Foreign Relations.
Dov Waxman (Moderator) is The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Foundation Chair of Israel Studies at UCLA, and the director of the Y&S Nazarian Center for Israel Studies. Previously, he was a professor of political science, international affairs, and Israel studies, and the Stotsky Professor of Jewish Historical and Cultural Studies at Northeastern University. His latest book is, The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict: What Everyone Needs to Know (2019).
