Each year the college awards merit- and need-based scholarships to applicants who demonstrate exceptional accomplishment and intellectual promise.
Explore Scholarship Opportunities at ARHU
Thanks to our generous donors, ARHU offers a variety of scholarships ranging from $500 to $6,000 per academic year. Many of these are renewable for up to four years, providing ongoing support as long as you maintain strong academic performance.
Key Dates to Remember:
- Application Start: Apply for the 2024-25 academic year starting February 12, 2024.
- New Student Announcements: Scholarships for new students are announced between mid-April and early May.
- Continuing Student Awards: Awards for returning students are typically given in late spring.
Eligibility and Application Details
To be eligible:
- Enroll full-time for both the fall and spring semesters of the 2024-2025 academic year.
- Maintain your ARHU major and meet the GPA requirements for each scholarship.
Important Notes:
- Renewable scholarships are available for up to eight consecutive semesters.
- Scholarship amounts may vary and will be included in your financial aid package, credited directly to your student account.
- Notifications are sent via email after the scholarship committee reviews applications.

Freshman Scholarships
Freshman Scholarships Overview
Students are considered for these scholarships on the basis of their application submissions to the university and their financial need. In addition to the many scholarships administered through the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, the College of Arts and Humanities offers the following scholarships for fall semester incoming freshmen.
The deadline for freshman scholarship consideration is Friday, March 15 at 11:59 PM.
Freshman Scholarships and Application Requirements
Students can apply for all scholarships below by using this link: 2024 Freshman Scholarships
- Dean’s Freshmen Scholars: A scholarship for academically talented, well-rounded students awarded for full time students attending the University of Maryland as a declared ARHU major.
- The Elizabeth Cannon Scholarship: A renewable scholarship for incoming freshmen from Maryland’s Eastern Shore with a declared ARHU major
- The Humanities Scholars Endowment (donor Charles S. Hirsch): This is a renewable, need-based scholarship for incoming students with a minimum 3.5 GPA
- Himelfarb Scholarship: This is a four-year, need-based scholarship for incoming students with a minimum 3.5 GPA; preference is given to History majors. Note: this award will not be offered to an incoming student for the 2024-2025 academic year.

Incoming Transfer Students
Overview of Scholarships for Incoming Transfer Students
Students are considered for these scholarships on the basis of their application submissions to the university and their financial need. Students transferring to UMD from another institution qualify to apply for the following scholarships.
Incoming Transfer Student Scholarships and Application Requirements
- ARHU Bridge Scholarship: For first-generation and/or students who are eligible for the University System of Maryland Nonresident Tuition Exemption and/or hold DACA status with the state of Maryland. Apply for the ARHU Bridge Scholarship by the new extended deadline of July 31, 2024
- Douglas and Holly Jacobs Memorial Scholarship: Awarded to incoming ARHU students transferring from a community college
Current Students
Overview of Scholarships for Current Students
Scholarship information and applications are made available each spring semester and awarded for the following fall semester; the Bridge Scholarship is offered each semester. To be considered for an award, students must be enrolled full-time for both the fall and spring semesters of the 2024-2025 academic year. Students must remain an ARHU major and maintain the GPA requirement for each scholarship. Renewable scholarships are offered for a maximum of 8 consecutive semesters. Scholarship amount is subject to change.
NOTES: Students may submit applications for the 2025-2026 year beginning February 2025.
Students may review detailed eligibility criteria and required documents prior to starting the application.
Applications will open in February 2025.

- Arundel Mills Scholarship: For Theatre, Music and/or Dance majors
- ARHU Bridge Scholarship: For first-generation and/or students who are eligible for the University System of Maryland Nonresident Tuition Exemption and/or hold DACA status with the state of Maryland and/or students who are returning to UMD after a two or more year separation
- Catherine Mackin Memorial Scholarship: For current first-year ARHU freshmen
- Catherine Vuozzo Scholarship: For ARHU majors in need of financial assistance
- Dean’s Fund: For students in Art, Dance, Music, and/or Theatre majors
- Heyward G. Hill Memorial Scholarship: For ARHU majors interested in a career in international affairs
- Hugh F. & Glen Hannah Cole Financial Aid Scholarship: For ARHU majors with demonstrated financial need; eligible students will be invited to apply
- James F. Harris Arts & Humanities Visionary Scholarship: For ARHU majors with outstanding academic achievement
- Stringer Foundation Performing Arts Scholarship: For Theatre, Music, and/or Dance majors
