426 students in designing and painting a 46ft x 8ft mural in the SIRJ lab

Prof. Donahue-Shipp led Paint on Site project with his ARTT 426 class

During the Fall semester, students in Professor Brandon Donahue-Shipp’s Paint on Site 427 course designed and completed a 46-foot by 8-foot mural for the Stormwater Infrastructure Resilience and Justice (SIRJ) Lab in Preinkert Hall at the University of Maryland. Created through close collaboration with SIRJ faculty, the mural transforms the lab’s south-facing wall into a vibrant visual reflection of the lab’s core values—equity, resilience, sustainability, and environmental justice—while emphasizing the impact of stormwater infrastructure on community health and collective well-being. The project provided student artists with a meaningful professional development opportunity, engaging them in research, design, and on-site installation within an interdisciplinary research environment, and fostering creative placemaking, cross-departmental collaboration, and a more welcoming, inclusive space for students, faculty, and visitors.
