022–23 ARHU Boren Recipients

The scholarships provide up to $20k for two semesters of critical language study.

Four students from the College of Arts and Humanities received Boren scholarships to study abroad in world regions critical to U.S. interests. The scholarships are part of the Department of Defense's National Security Education Program and provide up to $20,000 for two semesters of critical language study. In exchange for funding, Boren Award recipients agree to work in the federal government for a period of at least one year.
ARHU 2022–23 Boren Scholarship Awardees:
Matchai Abdoul Karim Sy Savane
Abdoul Karim is a senior double majoring in government and politics and Arabic Studies, with a minor in international development and conflict management. As a member of the Arabic Flagship Program at UMD, Karim will study Arabic in Morocco.
Molly Schreier
Schreier is a senior double majoring in government and politics and Arabic Studies, with a minor in French studies. She is a member of the Honors College. As a member of the Arabic Flagship Program, Schreier will study Arabic in Morocco.
Jordan Smith
Smith is a senior majoring in Arabic studies; he previously earned a bachelor’s degree in linguistics. As a member of the Arabic Flagship Program, Smith will study Arabic in Morocco.
Jacqueline Yannes
Yannes is a senior majoring in electrical engineering with minors in Korean studies, project management and global engineering leadership. Yannes will study Korean at Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea.
