Invoke

Arts for All | College of Arts and Humanities | The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center Thursday, February 18, 2027 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm Gildenhorn Recital Hall, The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center

About the Event

Described as “...not anything but everything: Classical, Folk, Bluegrass, Americana and a sound yet to be termed seamlessly merged into a perfect one” (David Srebnik, SiriusXM Classical Producer), Invoke successfully dodges even the most valiant attempts at genre classification. The multi-instrumental quartet encompasses traditions from across America, including bluegrass, Appalachian fiddle tunes, jazz and minimalism. Fueled by their passion for storytelling, this quartet of University of Maryland School of Music graduates weaves all of these styles together to form a unique contemporary repertoire, featuring original works composed by and for the group. Strings Magazine observes, "the remarkable string quartet Invoke has repeatedly proven one thing: it simply cannot be contained by any one label." In Grown from Roots, Invoke explores the origins of the string quartet itself and roots music's influences on classical music with works by Franz Joseph Haydn, William Grant Still, Florence Price and more!

Program

  • Haydn: String Quartet in C Major, Op. 20, No. 2
  • Invoke: Sunwalker
  • Still: The Jovial One from Lyric Quartet
  • Ravel: “Assez vif–très rythmé” from String Quartet
  • Price, arr. Mitze: “Finale: Presto” from Symphony No. 1
  • Invoke: Select Originals
