About the Event
Velvet Brown is an internationally acclaimed professor, soloist, chamber musician, conductor and recording artist. Having collaborated with jazz and commercial legends like Howard Johnson, Bob Stewart, and Doc Severinsen, she draws inspiration from life experiences to explore how personal events shape creativity, inspiring a veritable musical renaissance. Her performances are hallmarked by soul-searching musical patterns that help her develop a more profound relationship with the audience.
Ron Stabinsky, piano and harpsichord, received his first musical lessons at the age of five from Michael Hoysock, his grandfather and continued his studies with Edna Golandsky and Ilya Itin. His mentors in the art of free improvisation have included Bill Dixon and Joel Futterman. Each July, Ron presents a series of workshops to jazz pianists at the Golandsky Institute, an annual symposium at Princeton University. He performs throughout the United States and Europe with free improvising saxophonist Jack Wright, bass trombone virtuoso Dave Taylor, Meat Puppets bassist Cris Kirkwood and NEA Jazz Master David Liebman. Recent festival appearances include Newport Jazz Festival (USA), North Sea Jazz Festival (Netherlands), Moers Festival (Germany) and Jazz and More Festival Sibiu (Romania). He is a member of the new music ensemble Relâche, and the Peter Evans Quartet/Quintet/Octet.
Together, these musicians form the Azure Duo, presenting an exciting performance featuring works by Isabella Leonarda, Cait Nishimura, Oscar Pederson and more!
