Faculty Artist Series: A Night in Vienna with Left Bank Quartet

College of Arts and Humanities | School of Music | The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center Sunday, September 28, 2025 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, Gildenhorn Recital Hall

About the Event

David Salness, violin
Sally McLain, violin
James Stern, viola
Eric Kutz, cello

Consisting entirely of UMD School of Music string faculty, Left Bank Quartet returns to the stage with masterworks of both the First and Second Viennese Schools. This program opens with Alban Berg's String Quartet, Op. 3, a tempestuous work that was born from the frustration Berg and his wife, Helene, felt when her father initially forbade the two lovers from seeing each other. The performance concludes with Franz Schubert's final string Quartet in G Major, a work that perfectly captures Schubert's own words: "Whenever I attempted to sing of love, it turned to pain. And again, when I tried to sing of pain, it turned to love."

This performance will last approximately 2 hours, which includes one 15-minute intermission.
