ACTnow with Xênia França: Decolonize your Influence – African Spirituality in Contemporary Art and Music

College of Arts and Humanities | The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center Tuesday, December 1, 2020 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Brazilian singer Xênia França mixes tenderness and grit, resolve and romance inside songs that sprint through samba and drift through soul, nod to electronica and nestle into balladry. In this Arts Citizenship Talk (ACTnow) Xênia, visual artist Chanel Compton and medium, conjurer and crafty millennial Juju Bae (@alittlejujupodcast) have a not-to-be-missed conversation! Together, the three will explore the role of African spirituality in their daily lives, artistry and struggle to create a more liberal world. The conversation from this event will be included in an upcoming episode of Juju’s podcast “A Little Juju.”

From themes of racial violence and cultural appropriation to multiculturalism and gender equality, the work of The Clarice's 2020-21 visiting artists is complex, provocative and deeply sensitive. Arts Citizenship Talks (ACTnow) are opportunities to hear from these artists about the issues reflected in their works. These conversations are an invitation to act now!

Engagement on Campus and in the Community: During Fall 2020, Xênia França will virtually visit School of Music students to discuss music and social engagement.
