LATIN, GREEK AND NON-UMD LANGUAGE ASSESSMENT

For Greek or Latin:

If you are seeking assessment for Greek or Latin, contact Professor Katherine Wasdin. Once you know your placement, contact ARHU to review your results and possible exemption.

For languages not offered at UMD:

If you are fluent in a language not offered at UMD and you are seeking exemption from the ARHU Global Engagement Requirement, you may take the American Council of Teachers of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI).  Proficiency for languages offered at UMD must be assessed through the Foreign Language Placement Assessment.

  • Check the ACTFL website to determine if your language is offered for OPI testing. If your language is offered, take the ACTFL as soon as possible; languages are not guaranteed to remain available.
  • Your proficiency must be evaluated as Advanced-Mid, Advanced-High or Superior in order to demonstrate fluency and fulfill the ARHU Global Engagement requirement. If you place in a lower proficiency, you will not complete the ARHU Global Engagement requirement via the ACTFL OPI test.
  • The current price of the test is $124.00.
  • You must adhere to the UMD Code of Academic Integrity when completing the ACTFL, which prohibits you from receiving any unauthorized assistance with your OPI.
  • Register for an ACFTL account.
  • Once you are signed in with your ACTFL account:
    • Use this link to select your language:  Certification Types
    • Once you've selected your language, click on the option for "programs with ACTFL requirements"
    • Choose the “Univ. of Maryland College of Arts and Humanities” option in order to receive the discounted price (above) and grant ARHU access to your results.
  • You must use a landline phone for an approximately 30 minute conversation with a certified speaker of your particular language.

Contact ARHU to discuss your results 10 business days after completing your ACTFL.
